Peterhead fell further behind leaders Gretna with a goalless draw which saw them fail to score for the first time this season.

Despite the woodwork being struck on three occasions, there were few clear-cut chances for either side.

In the first half, Peterhead's Martin Bavidge won the ball in midfield before racing forward and shooting beyond the left-hand post. He was involved again after 13 minutes, sprinting down the right but failed to find a team mate with his cross into the penalty area.

Allan Youngson was unlucky to see a dipping 25-yard volley go over four minutes later.

The visitors had the best chance of the half, Greig McDonald seeing his header tipped on to the cross bar by home keeper Paul Mathers.

Early in the second half, Peterhead's David Hagen had a low drive well saved by keeper Scott Morrison. Then a Hagen corner was headed wide by defender Robert Raeside.

After 56 minutes, East Fife's Steven Nicholas sent a raging 25-yard drive on to the angle of the post and crossbar, and five minutes later Jamie Buchan hit the bar from 20 yards.

Bavidge had a great chance to score in injury time but shot wide with the goal at his mercy.
