Kevin Gordon's second-half double gave East Fife their first win in eight games against an awful Montrose side.

Paul Hampshire was in the mood after netting last week and forced Sandy Wood into a smart save after just two minutes.

The midfielder then opened the scoring after eight minutes with a fierce free-kick from 25 yards which arrowed into the bottom corner.

John Bradford missed the target and Stephen Fortune battered in a long-range drive that Wood just managed to tip over the bar.

Montrose hardly threatened, but they were awarded a soft penalty after 33 minutes when Craig Lumsden and Ian McLeod collided in the box. Justice was probably done when John Dodds plunged to his left to block Greig Henslee's weak spot-kick.

It got worse for Montrose, and Wood fumbled Gordon's low shot into the net in the 55th minute.

Hampshire then let fly with a thundering drive that the keeper was happy to see whistle wide.

Gordon got lucky again on 58 minutes when his shot from the edge of the box nicked off Stuart Ferguson's heel and spun into the net.

Dundee University student Gael Corré almost gained a consolation goal in the 76th minute, but Dodds brilliantly blocked the Frenchman's close-range effort.

With just two minutes remaining substitute Joe Savage strolled through a static defence and beat the keeper for the fourth goal.
